The large output sizes are mostly down to using the Flex Framework. Any time you have an MXML file, the flex framework will be included in the generated swf.
If you want a small file, stick to ActionScript and avoid the mx.* packages. That should result in a file size comparable to what you'd get from the Flash authoring tool.
