oddly, i've also tried replacing the line that passes the loadVars variable to the remote variable with one that passes a string to the remote variable and that doesn't work either >( 

ie
this
        _root.menu[thisKind].description_txt = thisInstanceText;

with
        _root.menu[thisKind].description_txt = "some other copy";

I don't get it
