Yes, that's a very clever solution, Simon. I couldn't log into the chat
component, but the smileys preview look quite good. On thing though - I
suspect that if somebody tries to copy and paste the text into notepad or
similar, the results might be a bit unexpected. 
Also, is it possible to use embedded fonts in the text area?

I'm also considering Joe's idea of overlaying the emoticons over the text,
if I can't manage to just move the images around using their ids. Thanks for
the pointers and gotcha's, Joe.

Neil's idea of using html/flash combo wouldn't really work for this project,
I'm afraid, as I'm extending an existing chat app, and the solution needs to
be confined to flash.
