Yep! that did it Attaching the clips to a placeholder clip, rather than duplicating a clip already on the stage did the trick. I guess each movie clip has its own 'depth stack', so I can put as many duplicates as I want, and they are all where they should be, based on the placeholders position on the root depth stack.
