When it comes to flash, I would definitely consider myself on the
designer-end of spectrum (although, I do code decent enough in other
languages, like PHP).
With that said, I use Flash MX 2004, and about a year+ ago, it seemed
like components were the shizzle... I guess my question is, has that
changed with the advent of F8?
Anyway, I use components way more than writing my own code (something I
hate to do, but it will get the job done and save a bit of time).
In either case, what would you like to see improved?
What is your biggest complain?
With components... well, most usually have way more code and assets
than I think I need... IMHO, when one is concerned about file-size,
this could potentially be a problem. I do not know enough to get-into
the component and hack-away at the unnecessary code.
I guess it depends on the component itself... some kick-butt, others
have issues.
Example: The other day I was using a FPS controller to control the
speed of nested MC's... the most frustrating thing was that the
component, once dropped onto stage, it did not allow me to click on
anything other than itself...
Another problem I ran into the other day, was with a linear animation
with a ton of nested graphics and movie-clips... From what I know, most
components need to be attached to Movie-clips... this can be
problematic if you have nested movie-clips and want to stop everything
via the main timeline... I found/wrote a bit of code that was supposed
to loop through all movie-clips on stage and stop them (nested or on
main timeline). That code worked, but the nested movie-clips that had
the FPS component attached to them were not affected by my stop script.
Lame... I ended-up deleting the FPS component and just key-framing the
FPS in.
Another issue I have with components is component management. I would
say I have a zillion components installed... Not that the current way
MX2004 manages things is bad, but I just think it could be better.
Also, I remember having some troubles moving components from one OS
installation to the other.
Oh, comments! I love it when developers comment code...
How would you like the skinning workflow to be?
Not dealt with that much myself... I do like the idea of global
styles... not exactly like CSS for browsers (which would be nice) but
seems like the best way to change the look of components.
Hmm, I really liked how the F8 video component is skinned, probably the
best way of skinning I have ever seen... but keep in mind, I am mainly
using MX2004, and have not installed a new component in about a year.
Well, hopefully I have not wasted anyones time with my response...
Sorry if I misunderstood any of your questions.
Cheers,
Micky
