You can do some searches and find a ton of tutorials on this I imagine, although the API is fairly straight-forward. The list() method is what you're interested in. As far as communication goes, you're going to have to use the Socket and ServerSocket classes. They make the task of communication between Flash and Java near painless. I can send a little sample socket server over if you want.
