You could do something like the following:

ball_hit_value = (((hit_position / paddle._width) * 100) - 50);

Then you end up with a number between -50 and +50 which can be used to
modify the angle of the bounce off the paddle.

By the way, I'm not sure how to get the hit_pos on the paddle... Anyone?
