Well yeah, that's what I would usually do, but that doesn't solve the specific problem I'm looking to solve here (I'm not concerned with the merits of this solution, I really just want to see if I can make it work).

If I could figure out how to detect when a new object tag has been added to the dom (I have some ideas, but have not tested them), then use some method call to disable it completely, I'd be satisfied with that. There is a disabled property, but I don't think that stops it from loading, I think that just stops the interactivity - is that correct? If so, does anyone know of a way to completely turn off an embedded object in IE?

Yes, don't write it to the page until you are ready for it to load. HTML is stateless, it's either there or it isn't. If it's there, it will load, if it's not, it won't. Use DHTML to add the tag to the page when you are ready for it to start loading.
