it sounds like you might be targeting the main clip and not the nested clip
beneath the mask.
mc >
mc.mask, mc.holder_mc (empty) - beneath the mask on a layer
mc.holder_mc.loadMovie("foo.jpg");
- should be affected by the mask layer inside of the mc movieclip
