that is a really interesting question in my view.
i understand your rationale. i am partly playing devil's advocate, but
since this is merely an email list, we do not have any other tools to
express how we felt about a particular comment. also, i think the nature of
the OP's original comment will help define whether these comments are more
'acceptable'.

it was my comment that got that +1. i was explaining a feeling that got
cemented in me when i was younger, and only one preson responded. if i got
no feedback at all it would not make me feel good. i would start
questioning if what i felt was valid or not, yada yada... if he was sincere
about the 'finally some facts +1' then i am very glad he (out of many),
responded with anything. maybe my thread was too abstract even for myself
(i definitely got lost a bit), but its nice to get feedback, that's why we
are part of this list right?

i don't want people to overdo that kind of thing, but as an email list we
are limited and i think there has got to be room to play.

i'll poke my head out the brush for a moment, don't want to suffocate
myself yet.
