I doubt very much if Macromedia sees the 8.5 release of the Flash Player for Mac as the same project as Flex Builder 2.0, so I assume they would allocate priorities and resources differently. Also, there is that java.awt / SWT threading bug that I mentioned. That would be a problem for Flex Builder, but not for the player.
I'd imagine that a lot of people will need to test their apps on OS X even if they don't develop on it, so that could be another reason.
