1. Flex 1.5 and Flex 2 makes your question more open ended.  Flex 1.5;
Enterprise clients. Flex 2.0, all you're existing clients + Enterprise
clients. There are still some projects better suited to Flash. Targeting
Flash 6 using AS? Use Flash; Flex 1/1.5 requires Flash Player 7.
Hard-core, small screen game? You could do it in Flex, but for all the
custom graphical assets, I'd use Flash, and more likely FAME.

2. 1.0 and 1.5 are about the same as MX 2004, except the components skinning
are a tad better. There are still blatant no-shows, like Panel and a few
others which expose a myriad of styles (more than Flash's older component
versions), but no easy way to skin them. Programatic skinning, for the most
part, is still better than Flash's. We're not there yet... at least in 1.5.

3. Absolutely! There is still a market for Director people too, and some do
quite well. If you do application development, you'll definately want to
make the inclusion of Flex into your workflow, but if you do all the other
million wonderful things you can do in Flash, you'll be just fine.

4. Dude, I get job offers everyday I have to forward to others. It's
insanity in the market right now; this'll only make things better. Keep in
mind, they've been getting Enterprise people for almost 2 years now too, so
it's not just more developers, but different types of developers. It's all
frikin' awesome.

5. The language itself? WAY more organized, and getting better all the
time. If you check out the migration sheet, you can see just a few of the
improvements. Standards based language, which any C# or Java developer
would immediately understand and appreciate, and us Flash developers will
love because we've seen where she's come from and have a bigger appreciation
for all the finer points.

Subject: [Flashcoders] Fears and anxiety regarding Flex

Hi All,

I should probably just sit back and let the dust settle, but the rapid fire
way MM is releasing new products makes me anxious.

Some questions below obviously can't be answered in a definitive way, but
I'd like to hear where other peoples heads are at...

1. What type of client will benefit from Flex? Is it only for large
corporations, enterprise level apps? Will my wedding photographer client
care?

2. To what degree does flex allow for a customized look? Can you do
anything you'd do with Flash 8? Will flex development most likely all look
the same?

3. If I ignore flex, zorn/eclipse, c#, java, etc and just stick with my
beloved flash 8, will there still be a market for me?

4. MM says they want to add an additional 1 million new developers to the
current pool of an estimated 2 million developers. If they are successful,
how do you think this will affect your market share? Will it generate more
opportunity because there will be an increased awareness to the power of
"flash"? or will the market become saturated with developers?

5. How is AS3 different from AS2? Would you say radical? Or is it
something that really only the mega geek (said with respect and love!) will
appreciate?

any thoughts are appreciated.

Kurt
