*Actually, there is no way to communicate between AVM2 and AVM3 other
*than I guess perhaps local connection. You cannot call AVM2 from AVM3.
My point was you can run AVM apps and you can run AVM2 apps.
While I understand the benefits of interop, such as easier porting, reuse of
old content in 8.5 SWF-s etc. it all has temporary benefit. In 3-4 years all
this complex interop with lots of special cases and complex conversions will
be a lot less useful, and just more excess baggage in the player, since most
of the content out there will use AVM2 exclusively (and old content will
live happily in AVM without needing any kind of interop).
But this is just *my* personal opinion. Macromedia is not blind to the need
if interop. So will it happen or not and when is up to Macromedia evaluating
the demand for this kind of interop.
The alpha is open and there are forums on Macromedia Labs, you're welcome to
contribute there and guide the development of Flex 2 as much as any Flash
developer who wants to take part in testing the alpha bits.
*I think I am quite capable of deciding how to integrate new technology
*into my current project. I know you are just trying to help, but I am
**not* some wet behind the ears newbie that doesnt understand the
*implications of all of this.
I've never tried that tone - I'm not suggesting you're a "newbie".
What I do see is that you were working on a large app for some time, now you
see a better technology which seems a perfect fit (8.5) but it doesn't work
with AMF 1.0 so you're understandably upset.
However I'd really not jump quickly to conclusions too soon.
Play with Flex 2 and see what it does. If Macromedia wouldn't implement AMF
1.0 layer for AVM2 for technical reasons, then nothing stops YOU from
implementing it. AS3 is mightily fast, it crunches bits and numbers like
it's nothing, and I do mean it. Also in several months we can see the OSS
implementations supporting the new AVM too, so I'd not rule that out as a
way for your project to be ported to the new 8.5 platform without major
issues.
