A sidenote... The reason why i'm asking about doing this manually is precisely due to what urami mentioned. Using software that's available causes the file not to run properly (this swf is a bit on the long and complicated side). So i thought that maybe taking a manual approach might give me more control over which techniques are used, and how... and maybe the errors could be worked around.
