You need to have all versions of the font embedded -- bold, italic, regular -- whatever versions you intend to use. You can create "dummy" textfields offstage that are identical to the real textfield, except don't give them an instance name and, for each one, select bold or italic in that textfield's properties panel. Embed the fonts in these just as you would for the "real" textfield. This will allow Flash to display bold and italic. There may be a way to embed fonts using textFormat or some other method, but I haven't played with it enough to get it to work.

Someone else might totally disagree, but in the past,that is how I have
managed to get my text to the look the way i want it too. Wrestling with
text, one of the many joys.
