Thanks. Excellent advice. However, the "very simple Flash movie" was just for illustration: my real problem is that I'm dealing with a legacy project that worked fine in Flash 6, but no longer works now that I've updated it to Flash 8. Changing all the TextFields to TextInputs may involve rather more work. Still, I'll try it.
