Another possible option is something along the lines of serial server, http://itp.nyu.edu/~dbo3/SerialServer/SerialServer.html. From the website, "SerialServer relays bytes back and forth from an internet socket connection to a hardware serial port." I've used this to get a flash app talking to picaxe microcontrollers.
