Thanks, but I'm already using the local path parameter:

so = SharedObject.getLocal ("MacbethProgressTracker", "/");

The shared object is stored here: C:\Documents and
Settings\Karina\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash
Player\#SharedObjects\G3H67MSC\localhost

Could it have something to do with the user SO settings?
