Ok - so it turned out that rebuilding the swf did not fix the problem.
After a few hours of testing with inconsistent results.. it seems
like another folder in the same directory as the FLA and class folder
is somehow causing problems.. i remove the folder and everything
works.. its not the name of the folder(i tried renaming).. the only
interesting thing about this folder is that it has a high number of
files.. 60k or so in various subfolders.. so i can only guess that
when flash is checking for class files it is running out of memory/
space etc and can't resolve the classes..
I never heard of this one.. but then again I've never had that many
files in a folder before..

Sometimes it seems to happen when you move files from machine to
machine, even though you clear your ASO files, but it also seems to
happen because the source .fla gets corrupted somehow. I have fixed
this by creating a fresh .fla and tossing the old one. Hopefully,

of your code is in the class files and you won't have to move too
many
library assets over. That seems to be one fix anyway - of course, be
sure your classpaths are correct in the new .fla.
