You can use the NetConnection Debugger, an amazing debugging tool that comes
with the free remoting components from Macromedia/Adobe (search the site for
'Download Flash Remoting Components'), or if you're feeling frisky, you can
grab XRay from osflash and learn that.
Breakpoints aren't really that necessary if you have other methods for
debugging. With the netconnection debugger and some trace statements, you're
good.
In order to use the NetConnection Debugger, you need to drag the Remoting
components to your stage from your library. You can find them in Window >
Other Panels > Common Libraries > Remoting. Drag them to your stage, they're
invisible so anywhere is fine but I usually put them in the upper left corner
so their lower right corners touch the upper left.
What I do with the netconnection debugger is I use a global method out. In
your first frame you put this line of code:
import mx.remoting.*
NetDebug.init();
_global.out = function(m) {
NetDebug.trace(m);
trace(m);
};
I think. This is going from memory and I don't have any source on this computer
right now.
So then instead of trace() you use out(). It allows you to debug in and out of
the IDE very easily. The NetConnection Debugger also outputs all kinds of
useful information about objects that you pass it, especially RecordSets and
such.

hiya -
I am using external .as files (for CVS and other reasons) but this seems to
prevent debugging of the movie - is there a way around this?
when i open the .AS files in the flashIDE and attach breakpoints, they have no
effect.
i dont really want to setup MTASC (or however i can get debugging to work with
opensource methods) - just want to use the flash debugger.
tips appreciated...
