It's the same. If you do:

htmlText = "Line 1<br />Line 2<br />Line 3";

It renders like:

Line 1Line 2Line 3

To the original poster; the other way to get it work is:

multiline = true;
htmlText = "Line 1<br />Line 2<br />Line 3";
// or htmlText = "<p>Line 1</p><p>Line 2</p><p>Line 3</p>";
