What problem are you having with connections over SSL? I've used it many times, (for loadvars, for loadmovie, etc), and never had to do anything extra, it just works.
You might have some trouble, if you load some files from http:// and some files from https://, there are a bunch of security restrictions built into the flash player. Easiest way is to just load everything from the same place (including the initial swf file).
