Yes, in Flash 8 you need to explicitly grant permissions for cross-domain data loading. By default, flash looks for the 'crossdomain.xml' file in the root directory of the server from which you are loading data. If you want to grant permissions to a specific sub-directory, put crossdomain.xml in that directory on the server and use System.security.loadPolicyFile() to tell flash where to find it.
