FWIW, I did an informal survey on a forum I'm on of "car enthusiasts." Pretty normal computer users.
Out of 15 responses 0 - Player 7 6 - Player 8 9 - Player 9 So, the adoption rate is pretty good. I asked, and nobody had any idea how they got Player 9. They were even surprised that they had it. So, no real need to play it conservative. Besides, since you need to use swfobject or similar to deal with Eolas, you might as well publish to Player 8.
