The nice thing about paypal are the IPM (isntant payment notifications): They call a PHP/ASP/whatever script on your server as soon as a new payment arrived, you get full transaction and status details and can store them in your DB. it´s quite well documentated here[1]. I can help you out with some PHP-code off-list for the basic API if neccessary.
