Various reasons. Most obviously, I've got a fair number of fields referencing the same text, and these may be at various levels. Also, the whole thing is embedded in Director and it's handy to just allow Director to set the value of the variable rather than having to call a function (in particular, Director can throw an error when you try to call a function in Flash before the movie has fully initialised, which is notoriously difficult to detect reliably) But yes, it looks like I'll have to go down the .text route.
