or you could use something like this class of myne http://www.mediaverk.lv/asd/com/jR/Math/ColorTween.as to get all color steps and afterwards apply that color in timed loop. Like var colors:Array = com.jR.Math.ColorTween.getColorArray([StartColor, endColor], numberOfSteps); and applying that color change within setInterval calls.
