One of the best books is Head First Design Patterns.
Really nice code. Well explained and shows how to get a lot of mileage out of code through thoughtful design. It will make you a better coder and get you thinking about design in new ways.
He was talking about graphic design, but I've skimmed Head First Design Patterns and I agree with you. If you know nothing about design patterns, the book eases you into it quite smoothly, with lots of examples and metaphors. Quality material for AS 2.0 and 3.0 coders who want to learn the true advantages of object-oriented programming.

(I only skimmed it because I'd already learned patterns from the Fowler and Gang of Four books... if you're a real propellerhead, you don't need the more friendly approach of Head First.)
