Thanks for this I had a look at the jumpeyecomponents but like you I couldn't see a way of making them fit with the rest of the CS3 components. Since I first posted I've made some more progress with the ASTRA components. It seems it is possible to use check, disable and instancName with the menu - it just isn't documented. For the record you can use the same property names as for the AS2 menu component.
Eg:
<menuitem label="red" type="check" instanceName="redInstance"  />
<menuitem label="orange" enabled="false"/>
<menuitem label="yellow" type="check" selected="true" />
