In Flex Builder, choose Project and properties.
On the compiler tab you can pass in the runtime size and colour...
-default-size 480 360 -default-background-color 0x0000FF

organized a site/link that steps someone through these differences in order
that a person can concentrate on one thing (patterns) and not lose focus?
