What everyone is getting so excited about is the canvas element, the ability for client side scripting to draw on a bitmap. It is far from a complete animation platform. At most it defines the interface for how to draw primitive shapes, and the rest is left to scripters.

Anyone wanting to compete with flash would have to reimplement the full composting and animation subsystems of flash, not to mention the various drawing features the canvas element may be lacking. Oh, and define their own data format and make their own editors.

You could the same thing if you just wrote your own plugin and used the native drawing api.

It's just not a complete solution and is not even nearly enough for people to use right now.
