Personally I like to use MySQL and PHP, but I am asked to create some app
which communicates with MS SQL server.

There a lot of easy to implement php scripts out there.
That is what I use. PHP and MySQL.

But here is a simple connection script for php to MSSQL for you to try if
you'd like.
Have not tested myself. FYI.
