interested in applicants for 2022, it is the good time now: the
application window has just opened a few days ago.

It depends on a project. The first project idea that you mentioned
"Emulate hardware and filesystem in platform-independent way for unit
tests" does not require additional hardware. The goal of the project
is to emulate hardware, so all the code written under it, will be
running without any hardware. You will need, however, to understand
how hardware is supposed to work, in order to emulate it.

This also depends on the project idea. Some ideas are more of
"application development", which is focused on flashrom as an
application. For such ideas, a small amount of experience with MIPS is
