Hi Dave.....using a trial setup of Ubuntu 9.10.....for fldigi i d/l the 
bin and set it up
wondered why i couldnt get the usual freqency readout in the top left 
corner until i looked under the View area and unticked no rig-log..a 
trap for old and young players....
might be an idea to not have these ticked so that anyone can see there 
fldigi desktop as they are used to it and can then  try out the various 
parts of the View menu and make a decision to their liking.....

just out of interest im using Pulseaudio with vers AS ..waterfall is a 
little jumpy so ive reverted to Portaudio until i can sort the problem out
