You don't need caps/nocaps to communicate... just to make it pretty. If there's one character set, saying it "is" upper case or lower case is kind of silly, eh? It's a matter of one bit in the display programming. If you have good eyes and can easily see serifs and such, then maybe l/c is best for you. If not, u/c might be better because the things that discriminate the characters from each other are spread over a larger area. Kind of like the difference between SGML and HTML here... who controls the markup? The designer guy who says "the mode has only upper case" or the operator who says "the heck you say, it'll all be lower, with auto-caps on sentence starts and all caps in calls, thank you very much."
