I have always thought that the default 3580 display was wrong. I don't think this issue really has anything to do with operator class or training; I think it's more an issue of correct display and discoverable UI features; we don't want to hide the feature in menus so it should be clearly discoverable, but we don't want to display inaccurate information either.
I hesitate to offer more suggestions for how to "fix" it, but it does seem that graying it out until you click on it, or showing an "unknown" indicator or something would be more useful than showing a default that's probably not right.
