These are the saved values in fldigi.pref if I close fldigi when it's
maximised:

main_x:3
main_y:48
main_w:1914
main_h:1004

ubuntu 10.04 at 64 bits, gnome

I never tested this before, so I'm not sure I'm seeing the same thing as
Joe reported. This is how I reproduce it:

- open fldigi at my normal window size.
- maximise (using the wm button)
- close fldigi
- open fldigi
at this point fldigi starts in window mode (i.e. the wm button allows
me to maximise again), the browser pane is completely gray without
  the alternating lines or anything.
- with some patience, resize fldigi to my usual shape
  the browser pane stays gray
- close fldigi
- start fldigi
at this point all is back to normal behaviour, with the browser showing
the alternating gray and white lines
