Flex is much more sensitive to version changes then Java. Imagine you have a new crew member that setup his environment using flex 4 instead of flex 3. You can get errors to build the project. Even worse. Some build application using flex 3.1 and another person uses flex 3.2 to compile a module. At releases this shouldn't happen but at daily work that can happens, and will introduce problems really hard to catch.
Doing as flex-mojos does you ensure everyone is on the same version and in what version they are. Other then that, on israfil you need to setup your environment before start. That is something I don't like, specially on maven.
