Okay so I think I found a slightly better way.

I notice that by default flex-mojos adds entries here

/Users/<your user name>/AppData/Roaming/Macromedia/Flash Player/
#Security/FlashPlayerTrust

so I just added an entry in here for my manually copied
FlexMonkeyLauncher.swf file (I copied it into target) - this allows me
to run up FlexMonkey and play with the application to find out the
command syntax.
