I could not find an updated API reference online but [1] shows already contentBackgroundColor. In the downloaded 4.0.0.13555 API doc, it is also shown. Because Flash Builder compiles a colored TextInput, I think, it is there.
I will try at the weekend to find the root cause of the error.
