Finally found a solution last night:

Long story short, if your linux box is 64-bit and you are using a
standalone player (I was using version 10, I would imagine it is true
for earlier ones as well), make sure that you have the 32-bit versions
of curl and nss installed.

Also, I had to set HOME to the Hudson user's (in our case root) home
directory, not the tomcat install dir, in /etc/init.d/tomcat.

Velo, I can add these comments to the unit testing wiki page if you
think they would be useful?
