@James - Usually you configure an execution for a plugin with the goal
you want to skip and specify "<skip>true</skip>" - but this presumes
that the skip option is available for that goal.  I do this in order
to skip unit tests during the unit test phase with flexmojos in favor
of my own execution bound to the integration test phase.

I do not know of any way in which you can unbind a goal from a phase
in the default (or any other) Maven lifecycle...sorry I can't be more
helpful.
