I'm not going to argue that many people use "open source" as a synonym for free software! But, it not as cut and dry as that. For example, Badgeware is a term I've heard used to define software that meets the "open source" definition with the exception that you must include a logo from the originator somewhere. People often refer to "Badgeware" as OSS. This Wikipedia article talks a bit about how some companies use the term "open source" even though they aren't following the "Open Source Initiative" definition; which can further muddy the definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source_software#Open_source_software_versus_free_software I stand by my belief that: Open Source != Free Free != Open Source There are plenty of programs that are free, but not open source. And plenty of programs that are open source but not free. I was under the impression that some licenses that many use for open source strayed out of the OSI definition (but have not taken time to read any of them and compare them to the definition).
