  I'm not going to argue that many people use "open source" as a 
synonym for free software!  But, it not as cut and dry as that.

  For example, Badgeware is a term I've heard used to define software 
that meets the "open source" definition with the exception that you 
must include a logo from the originator somewhere.  People often 
refer to "Badgeware" as OSS.

  This Wikipedia article talks a bit about how some companies use the 
term "open source" even though they aren't following the "Open Source 
Initiative" definition; which can further muddy the definition:

  I stand by my belief that:

Open Source != Free
Free != Open Source

  There are plenty of programs that are free, but not open 
source.  And plenty of programs that are open source but not free.  I 
was under the impression that some licenses that many use for open 
source strayed out of the OSI definition (but have not taken time to 
read any of them and compare them to the definition).
