Because that is the way I am used to doing it when working with DOM and
CSS and other kinds of technologies, of course!!!



You are right, but to be fair to myself, I am dealing with 'repeated'
elements using the <mx:Repeater...> tag.  So it is not quite a straight
forward ID reference.  But your comment triggered my memory of the
documentation I read discussing how one references repeated controls and
containers.
