I haven't investigated it (yet), but AIR has some form of update API 
where it can check a server (?) to see if it has the latest version of 
the app installed.  The version number is defined as a variable in the 
-app.xml document.  I understand you can force the app to update 
relatively seamlessly.

  This is not something I've needed to do yet, though.
