Some of the things that I can list for using Flex instead of
Silverlight is:-

#1: Flex is not from Microsoft..!
#2: Flex SDK is open source
#3: Flex is in the market for relatively more time than SilverLight.
Hence the SDK, the IDE, the support group, the market etc are more
when compared to Silverlight. I have been seeing the Flex 1.0 from the
days of Macromedia when I had a chance to help the team on it back in
2004-2005. So you know how old Flex is..!
#4: Flex is relatively easier to get started than Silverlight. You
dont have to master those complex multipurpose tools that silverlight
ships with. Flex has its own dedicated IDE for it.
#5. Fles developer community is awesome and generous enough to come up
with loads of open source tools..!

Hope this is enough for you to be inspired to get into Flex.

All the best,
-Anish
