thanks for responding. I am probably just looking in the wrong direction, but a 
test
application as simple as

package
{
 import flash.display.MovieClip;

 public class test extends MovieClip
 {
        public function test()
        {
         trace(this.focusManager);
        }
 }
}

does not compile in mxmlc.
