Honestly, i think the freely type-able date field (like my new component has) will do far more for a person entering their date of birth than a button to navigate years. I'd personally rather enter the 10 keystrokes for my DOB, than have to click a back one year button 35 times.

The other issue that Will raised about moving back and forth by a year is still absent. Just think of a user trying to enter the date of birth of a customer who has come to get his insurance policy for driving license, lets put the person happens to be in his mid 50s.
