Before I go digging to figure it out, I wanted to see how close I was. If I put a button called "submit_pb" in a ViewStack, I can still reference my submit_pb normally; I don't have to do myView.submit_pb to access the methods & properties on submit_pb.
That's because submit_pb is really just a reference to the Button object. The submit_pb reference is a member (in ActionScript terms) of the Application object, not the ViewStack object.
var submit_pb = myView.createChild(Button, ...); // you can obviously access submit_pb here
