Have any Flex events come into existence yet?

I know of many annual technology specific convocations (like JavaOne,
Flashforward, next month's TheServerSide Java Symposium, etc).

Have any meetings, conferences, conventions, etc been planned around Flex yet?
(Other than as a subtopic at Macromedia's Annual MAX Conference.)

No "Flex World" at Moscone or Javits (boy, a name like that would draw the
curious ;-), but there's currently a range of virtual events... click
http://www.macromedia.com/events and select by product to get a tailored
display.

Another way to look at this is to consider the Flex authoring process as
one step in getting a larger job done, with Flex-specific content being one
constituency at a larger show... events which feature web technology
solving financial, educational or other problems could be a good resource
for either track events or birds-of-a-feather sessions.

Hi,

I do think we will have at least one or a few folks at the ServerSide and
since Java One is in SF that is local for much of the team. Who on this
list will be at one or the other or both? We could set up an informal get
together somewhere if enough folks are interested. :)

David,

I will be in town for ServerSide and am interested in joining a get together.
( www.theserverside.com/symposium/ )

Have not yet committed on JavaOne (since it is June 27-30)
( http://java.sun.com/javaone/sf/ )

Please let me know if you do schedule get togethers at either.

I know Flex allows programmatic skinning, but we have a graphic designer who
needs to modify the theme in a non-programmatic fashion. In Flash, it was
easy to find Halotheme.fla and modify it, but I can't find the corresponding
theme file for Flex.

Does anyone know what filename the theme file is for Flex and where to find
it?

Thanks.

If my proposal is accepted, I'll be (speaking) at Java One....I guess we'll
know in 3 or 4 weeks.

Informal get-togethers my speciality.

flexcoders,

Using Flex Builder, I create a very simple Flex app with a canvas

this? Here is the message returned by Flex Builder:

Using Tomcat?, if so:

There have been a couple threads that indicate you should boost the
memory settings:

Open the apache tomcat configuration app in sys tray, and on the "Java"
tab, bump up the initial memory pool size and the maximum memory pool
size to 512 Initial and 768 Max, click Ok

In \Program Files\Apache software Foundation\Tomcat
5.0\bin\catalina.bat, in the last section immediately after "rem Execute
Java with the applicable properties", insert this line, set
CATALINA_OPTS=-mx1024m. Save the file.

Subject: Bizzare - Flex app crashes on Windows player 7,0,19, works fine on Mac
OSX 7,0,24

Hello,

Has anyone ever come across something that works on one of these but
not the other? Here's a summary of what we're seeing with the same
web application across various player/server combos:

Player
OSX 10.3.8 7,0,24
Flex Server
JRun 4 on OSX
Result
Works fine

Player
Win XP 7,0,19
Flex Server
JRun 4 on OSX
Result
Application loads, then hangs player and browser when populating a
datagrid. Low virtual memory warning appears

Player
W2K 7,0,19
Flex Server
JRun 4 on OSX
Result
Application loads, then browser and player crash completely when
populating a datagrid.

Player
Win XP 7,0,19
Flex Server
Tomcat 5.0.27/Linux RHE 3 WS
Result
Application runs very slowly (minutes to populate datagrid).

We're going to take it up with support, but can't think what should be
different in the players to make this happen. No embedded fonts,
caching swos disabled. Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Robin

Goran,

This code should help.

PS. The event.detail contains the information needed to tell you which
button was clicked. I.E. 1 == YES and 2 == NO. Hope this helps!

Import mx.controls.Alert;

var alert = Alert.show("Are you sure you want to delete this item?",
"Confirm Delete", Alert.YES | Alert.NO);

alert.addEventListener( "click", mx.utils.Delegate.create( this, confirm
) );

Goran,

There seems to be a typo in my last post... The confirm method should
look like this:

private function confirm( event )

{

switch ( event.detail )

{

case 1:

break;

case2:

break;

}

}

Goran,

This code should help.

PS. The event.detail contains the information needed to tell you which
button was clicked. I.E. 1 == YES and 2 == NO. Hope this helps!

Import mx.controls.Alert;

var alert = Alert.show("Are you sure you want to delete this item?",
"Confirm Delete", Alert.YES | Alert.NO);

alert.addEventListener( "click", mx.utils.Delegate.create( this, confirm
) );

private function confirm( event )

{

switch ( event.detail )

case 1:

break;

case2:

break;

}

Is anyone familiar with event handling on Alert boxes (buttons)?

I have a form with an alert box with two button choices (OK and NO)

I want to be able to execute a function based on the selected option.

Thanks,
Goran

Subject: Custom Progress Bar

Hi All,

I have converted a movieclip (in flash) to a .swc file which is a
progressbar. I wish to use the same as a custom progress bar for
my
flex app. Below is the <Application> mxml code:

<mx:Application backgroundColor="#FFFFFF" pageTitle="Cinema Login"
xmlns:mx="http://www.macromedia.com/2003/mxml";
xmlns:my="components.*" xmlns="*" preloader="myProgBar">
(pls. ignore the namespaces above)

I have copied the above mentioned .swc file to
web-inf\flex\user_classes

I did restart the server after copying it.

Error given is as below:
"Could not find preloader component class 'myProgBar'"

The actionscript code used in the .swc file as below:
(I know this code wouldn't help u but still.. )

Frame1:

var bytesLoaded:Number;
var bytesTotal:Number = _parent.getBytesTotal();
var temp:String;
var myNum:Number;

Frame 2:

bytesLoaded = _parent.getBytesLoaded();
myNum = bytesLoaded/bytesTotal*100;
if(myNum < 10) {
temp = "0" add myNum.toString();
} else {
temp = myNum.toString();
}
temp = temp.substr(0, temp.indexOf(".") + 2);
dispData = temp add "% Loaded";// dispData is a dynamic
textfield

Frame 3:

if(bytesLoaded == bytesTotal)
play();
else
gotoAndPlay(1);

May I know what is it that I have forgotten or have done something
wrong.

Thanks.

Regards.,
Ketan Bengali

Hi Dirk,

I've successfully used flex 1.5 (and flex 1.0) with flashorb.

flashorb automatically converts .net datasets to actionscript
resultsets.
I was having difficulties using flashremoting.

regards
bod

Here's an example that shows usage of both properties to achieve restricted
input in an editable DataGrid:

Hi Aldo,

>- flex does address some issues that are the main reason behind many
lib efforts (AnimationPackage for instance). It would not be advisable
to use a tweening engine other than the one included in Flex for the
sake of simplicity and mantainability. Not to mention the work done by
layout manager

As far as I know AnimationPackage does use the same tween engine like Flex
does. (for time based tweening, it's mx.effects.Tween) Anyway, if you have
some ideas how to improve AP, let me/us know.

I don't know much about this beyond what I've read in the docs, but
maybe this will provide us a clue:

http://www.markme.com/eanderson/archives/006489.cfm

Does your preloader work if you put it in the same directory as your
app's main MXML file?

If you could send me the SWC file off list (with the source code), I
could try experimenting with it.

Manish

Your XP box is low on memory?

Hmm, yes, that sounds like a good way to do it.
